Wells Branch Austin Neighborhood
The Wells Branch neighborhood may seem quiet now, though that might not be the case in the future. Currently, the neighborhood and surrounding area is largely residential with some nearby chain restaurants and a local library. The two upcoming events that may reshape this community are the planned light rail system and the development of the new Simon shopping area.
Wells Branch is the street that connects IH35 to Mopac, which is in the process of being extended. This street is North of Parmer and provides easy access to those commuting to Dell and nearby businesses. If you continue to head West on Wells Branch Parkway, you will pass Mopac and find yourself on Howard Lane. The starter line of the light rail is expected to start in the Howard Lane area just West of Mopac and run south, which will provide commuters an alternative route to Downtown Austin and beyond to Ben White. The starter line is expected to be completed by 2008.
In addition to the upcoming light rail station, a new shopping center is being built in the area. Simon Property Group is building the Domain near Mopac and Braker, which will bring unprecedented new Austin shopping opportunities. The plan is to build 700,000 square feet of retail space and restaurants, 75,000 square feet of Class A office space and 390 apartment units. At the completion of this project in March 2007, Austin will have its first Neiman Marcus and Macy's, in addition to Barneys Co-Op, BCBG Max Azria, and Calypso Christiane Celle. Other high end stores such as Tiffany and Co., Polo Ralph Lauren, Emporio Armani and Louis Vuitton are expected to be represented as well.
