Area Independent School Districts
Populations in the Austin Texas public schools have been growing tremendously over the last several years as the Austin job market continues to increase, especially in the high tech sector. But along with this growth, there has been lots of investment in the school districts by both the state and local businesses which has improved Austin public schools. The public education system is one of the big drivers for Austin's growth recently as well. Many Austin Texas schools rank among the nation's leaders in high-quality education, but there are some schools that have been identified as low performing as well.
Schools in Texas are overseen by the Texas Education Agency. Local areas are broken down into regional Education Service Centers which liason between TEA and the Independent School Districts (ISD). Austin Texas is included in Region 13 ESC. There are 10 separate independent school districts in the Austin area that run the individual public schools.

All the Austin public school districts operate special schools or programs for physically and mentally handicapped students as well as those with behavioral or emotional problems. In addition, Central Texas' many Spanish speaking students are offered bilingual or English as a second language classes. There are also opportunities for advanced placement and honors classes.
The public school year varies but roughly it is from mid August till late May.
